Eight years have passed since the referendum organized by Masoud Barzani and other political parties of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

On Thursday, September 25, 2025, Masrour Barzani described the referendum as "the day of the courageous decision of the Kurdish people” and a victory for the nation’s will.

The 2017 referendum, however, led to serious consequences: the Kurdistan Region lost control over nearly 51 percent of its territories, and citizens faced worsening living conditions. At that time, Shaswar Abdulwahid was the only political leader who openly opposed holding the referendum.
