The Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) has announced that by mid-2026, all cash transactions in government institutions will come to an end, as the country transitions to a fully electronic payment system.

Zirgham Musa, Director of Supervision of Financial Institutions at the CBI, said on Monday that the institution has made significant progress in implementing digital payment systems, under the framework of new financial regulations and with the direct supervision of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Sudani and other ministry experts.

According to Musa, trillions of dinars have already been paid electronically, with the Ministry of Interior fully ending its reliance on cash transactions. Several initiatives are also being introduced to encourage other state institutions to integrate into the digital framework.

He predicted that Iraq will formally bid farewell to cash transactions across all state institutions and beyond in July 2026, marking a turning point in the country’s financial infrastructure.
