The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), along with 17 local and international organizations concerned with press freedom, has called on the outgoing Kurdistan Regional Government to immediately and unconditionally release journalist Sherwan Sherwani.
In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, the organizations warned that the continued imprisonment of Sherwani would seriously damage the Kurdistan Region’s international reputation as a region committed to democracy, human dignity, and the rule of law.
The statement stressed that Sherwani has been unjustly imprisoned for his journalistic work and has faced systematic judicial harassment aimed at silencing protesters and independent journalism.
The organizations also urged the authorities to stop misusing the law against journalists, ensure that all judicial procedures comply with international standards of justice and transparency, and take concrete steps to safeguard the safety and independence of the press.
