The Iraqi Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday that Iraq will receive the South Korean-made KM-SAM air defense system early next year as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s air defense capabilities.

Tahsin Khafaji, Director General of Information and Guidance at the Defense Ministry, confirmed that the contract with South Korea has reached its final stage and the system is expected to be operational in early 2026.

The KM-SAM defense system is a medium-range missile platform that can be deployed both on the ground and in the air. It is considered one of the core components of the South Korean military’s air defense network, designed to counter aerial threats with precision and speed.

Khafaji emphasized that the purchase is part of Iraq’s broader plan to modernize its armed forces and enhance its ability to defend its airspace amid regional security challenges.
