The US Department of Defense announced on Monday that direct financial assistance to the Peshmerga will end next year, to be replaced with an expanded budget for weapons, vehicles, and training.
In its budget request report for the Anti-ISIL Training and Equipment Fund for fiscal year 2026, the Pentagon outlined a shift in US support for the Peshmerga and security forces in Iraq and Syria. According to the report, $61 million will be allocated for training and arming the Peshmerga forces.
The decision comes in line with a memorandum of understanding signed in September 2022 between the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), which stipulates that the Iraqi government will take on responsibility for financial assistance to the Peshmerga, while the US role will focus on capacity-building and military support.
