Hemn Abdulrahman, a Kurdish cardiologist and neurologist, announced on Thursday, September 18, 2025, that he successfully performed heart nerve transplant surgery without the use of anesthesia.
Speaking at a press conference, Abdulrahman explained that instead of relying on full anesthesia and chest-opening procedures, his team injected the area locally and created a small incision around the nipple to carry out the surgery.
The doctor emphasized that this technique is particularly significant for elderly patients and those who fear general anesthesia. He cited the example of an 80-year-old man from Algeria, who successfully underwent the procedure after refusing open-heart surgery with general injections.
Abdulrahman noted that his team has been advancing heart surgery methods since 2021, when they first introduced Nazur surgery in Iraq. With more than 1,200 successful operations to date, he said the new development represents a "wide horizon” for patients previously considered too high-risk for traditional operations.
