Outgoing Prime Minister Masrour Barzani delivered a speech marking the occasion, in which he thanked teachers for their role in continuing the education process despite unresolved salary and infrastructure problems. "I hope this crisis will end soon,” Barzani said, but he offered no promises to resolve the long-standing issue of unpaid teachers’ salaries.

Barzani’s remarks come as the fate of public sector salaries across the Kurdistan Region remains uncertain. The government has failed to comply with agreements signed with Baghdad, leaving employees, including teachers, without clarity on when their wages will be paid.

The situation has placed significant strain on the education system. Thousands of teachers have retired early following government decisions, creating a shortage of staff. At the same time, many schools across the region are in urgent need of renovation or reconstruction, forcing some to operate on two or three shifts.

In previous years, the crisis over unpaid salaries sparked boycotts by both teachers and students, disrupting the education process. While the new school year has begun, concerns remain that the ongoing financial and administrative deadlock will once again affect the future of education in the Kurdistan Region.
