A member of the New Generation Movement faction in the Kurdistan Regional Parliament, Akbar Gharib, criticized the outgoing Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) for failing to address urgent educational needs while continuing recruitment for security forces.
Speaking on Sunday, September 21, 2025, Gharib said the government has not paid two salaries this year alone and highlighted the outdated Ministry of Education plan for the current academic year. "There are 1.95 million students in the Kurdistan Region, more than 180,000 teachers and employees, and 160,000 new students have registered this year. Yet only 28 schools have been decided to be built—just a decision, not actual implementation,” he said.
Gharib also noted that two new psychology subjects were added to the eighth and tenth grades, which require specialist teachers. "Only 900 teachers are needed, but recruitment for security forces continues uninterrupted,” he said.
He warned that the poor state of education in the Kurdistan Region has significantly harmed Kurdish society. "The damage caused by the education system is nothing less than the damage inflicted by our historical enemies. While the whole world is trying to revive education, the Ministry of Education here seems to work in the opposite direction,” Gharib added.
