The new school year has begun in the Kurdistan Region and Kirkuk, with more than 139,000 new first-grade students starting classes today in all public schools.

The first day of the academic year officially began on Sunday, September 21, across the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRG) and Kirkuk. There are about 6,000 schools in the Kurdistan Region, of which 56 percent are located in Erbil and Duhok, while 43 percent are in Sulaimanyah and Halabja.

According to the Director of Education in Sulaimanyah, 43 schools under the General Directorate of Education in Sulaimanyah need to be demolished and rebuilt, while 108 schools require repairs. This situation has forced some schools to operate in two or even three shifts to accommodate students.

In addition, a large number of teachers have been separated from their schools due to the government’s early retirement decision, creating a significant gap in educational institutions.

In previous years, the education sector also faced repeated boycotts by both students and teachers due to the non-payment of salaries by the outdated government.
