The Sulaimanyah Court of Appeal (SCA) on Sunday upheld the sentence of Shaswar Abdulwahid Qadir, leader of the new generation movement, to five months in prison.

Abdulwahid was arrested on August 12, 2025, when security forces raided his home in Sulaimanyah without prior notice. His detention was based on several complaints that have yet to be proven in court, raising questions about the legality of the process.

The arrest sparked widespread attention, with both local and foreign media linking the move to Abdulwahid’s recent criticism of the Kurdistan Regional Government. Just a week before his arrest, he had warned that if the government failed to resolve the salary crisis and implement its agreements with Baghdad, his party would adopt a serious stance.

The court’s decision to uphold the prison sentence has further fueled controversy, with many observers viewing it as politically motivated amid heightened tensions between the opposition and the outgoing government.
