The Iraqi Ministry of Transportation announced on Monday that it is working to extend the national railway network to Zakho as part of the broader Development Road project, which aims to connect the Grand Faw Port in Basra to Fishkhabur near the Turkish border.

Ministry spokesman Maysam Safi said significant progress has been made in rehabilitating railway lines across northern and western Iraq, including routes from Mosul to Baghdad. He added that two new lines connecting Faw to Fishkhabur are under development, alongside efforts to reopen suspended lines such as the Baghdad–Kirkuk route.

He noted that 12 lines were restored last year, reflecting the ministry’s commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure and strengthening regional trade. The Development Road project includes both road and rail routes stretching approximately 1,175 kilometers, linking Iraq and Turkey to global markets.
