The head of the Association of Returned Refugees from Europe, Bakr Ali, announced that more than 6,000 citizens have left the Kurdistan Region in the past nine months seeking to reach Europe through irregular migration routes.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Ali said about 300 people from the Kurdistan Region are currently stranded in Tunisia and Libya, many of whom are facing serious humanitarian conditions.

He confirmed that European countries have returned more than 100 Iraqi citizens to the federal government in recent weeks. Those deported include people from Raperin, Zakho, Duhok, Erbil, and Sulaimanyah.

Ali also reported that two yachts carrying over 25 passengers collided off the coast of Libya while heading toward Italy, and the fate of the passengers remains unknown.

He urged the citizens of the Kurdistan Region not to endanger their lives or their children’s safety through illegal migration, warning that the journey is extremely dangerous and often ends in tragedy.
