Kurdawan Jamal, head of the New Generation faction in the Kurdistan Parliament, said the arrest of movement leader Shaswar Abdulwahid is driven by fear of the upcoming elections and the growing popularity of the New Generation Movement.

He stressed that the mistreatment and humiliation of Abdulwahid by PUK forces inside the Sulaimanyah court has created public resentment, particularly in Sulaimanyah.

On August 12, 2025, security forces raided Abdulwahid’s home late at night and arrested him without prior notice. He was later sentenced to five months in prison by the Sulaimanyah court, despite the complaints against him remaining unproven.
His arrest has sparked widespread reactions, with local and international media linking it to his earlier warning that the Kurdistan Region must resolve the salary issue and honor agreements with Baghdad, or face a serious response.
