After two and a half years of suspension, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) resumed oil exports today. A source in the oil companies told NRT that 130,000 barrels of oil will be exported under the supervision of Iraq’s State Oil Marketing Organization (SOMO).
SOMO confirmed it has received 190,000 barrels per day from the Kurdistan Region for the first time. The first shipment departed from the Sheikhan oil fields in Duhok and is expected to reach the Turkish port within 24 hours.
The source said that revenues from the exports will, for the first time, return directly to the federal treasury through the Central Bank. SOMO also noted that oil companies will be paid their entitlements.
Meanwhile, the outgoing KRG has said it intends to hand over oil only for three months, linking the move to upcoming elections.
