An adviser to the Iraqi prime minister says they have increased drug production by 30 percent in the past three years.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s Adviser on Industry and Development Affairs, Hamoud Lami, said Tuesday that the government has increased domestic medicine production from 10% to 40% since the beginning of the current cabinet.
He explained that this expansion comes as part of the government’s plan to achieve self-sufficiency in essential pharmaceuticals and reduce reliance on imports.
According to Lami, the number of factories operating in Iraq’s pharmaceutical sector has risen from 22 to 24, with more plants expected to open soon as private investment grows.
He also revealed that work has begun to produce cancer medicines locally, with expectations to start full production within the next five years.
The adviser emphasized that supporting the local pharmaceutical industry not only ensures medicine availability but also creates jobs, enhances national expertise, and helps stabilize prices in the health sector.
