The Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education has officially banned smoking in all public and private universities and colleges across the country, announcing that the decision will take effect in the 2025–2026 academic year.
According to the ministry’s statement issued on Monday, penalties will be imposed on anyone who violates the new rule including teachers, employees, and students. The fines are set at 25,000 Iraqi dinars for teachers, 15,000 dinars for university staff, and 10,000 dinars for students.
The Ministry of Higher Education said the decision aims to create a healthy, clean, and smoke-free learning environment and to minimize the negative effects of smoking on academic communities.
