The Iraqi Ministry of Commerce has announced a new plan to regulate and control vehicle imports, as part of efforts to better manage the growing number of cars entering the country each year.

Hashim Sudani, director of the General Car Company at the ministry, said on Tuesday that Iraq imports around 200,000 vehicles annually, according to traffic department data.

He explained that a comprehensive study has been prepared, containing several proposals that address the import of old, used, damaged, and new vehicles. The study will soon be submitted to the Council of Ministers for Economic Affairs for approval, after which new import regulations will be issued.

Sudani noted that the study was developed in coordination with several relevant institutions, including the Public Transport Authority, the Department of Standardization and Quality Control, and the Ministries of Transport, Labor, and Environment, as well as the Roads and Bridges Directorate of the Ministry of Construction and Housing and the Baghdad Municipality.
