The gasoline crisis reappeared in Erbil on Sunday, October 12, 2025, as long lines formed at fuel stations across the city. Drivers said they have been waiting for hours to obtain cheaper gasoline amid rising prices and declining fuel quality.

Many citizens blamed the outdated Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) administration, accusing it of trading oil meant for domestic use. Despite Baghdad providing 50,000 barrels of oil daily to the Kurdistan Region for internal consumption, much of it is reportedly handed over to private refineries instead of being distributed fairly.

According to available data, the Kurdistan Region requires around six million liters of gasoline each day. The 50,000 barrels of oil supplied by Baghdad are capable of producing more than three million liters daily enough to cover most of the region’s domestic demand if managed properly.
