Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani warned that not participating in the upcoming elections would encourage corruption and entrench power-sharing between political blocs.
Prime Minister Sudani told Reuters that the upcoming elections represent a turning point between past instability and the current stage of security, reconstruction, and services. He expressed confidence in the public’s awareness to choose candidates who work for progress rather than offer slogans and excuses.
He said the elections will witness broad participation, especially among young people who make up 60% of the Iraqi population, stressing that abstaining from voting would open the door to corruption and undermine citizens’ power to shape their government.
Sudani also noted that since 2007, Iraq has had 2,582 suspended projects worth 131 trillion dinars, while the government’s commitments over the past three years totaled 33 trillion dinars. His administration, he said, has focused on improving services, reforming the economy, and developing balanced foreign relations.
He added that Iraq has managed to avoid involvement in regional conflicts and has played a diplomatic role in easing tensions and preventing escalation among neighboring countries.
