The Iraqi Independent High Election Commission (IHEC) has warned that any violation of the election silence period before voting day could result in penalties, including the removal of candidates from the race.
Hassan Hadi Zair told the official newspaper that any campaign or activity during the silence period is a clear breach of election regulations, and violators will face financial or administrative penalties based on the severity of the violation. He added that the commission may impose stricter measures, including disqualification, if the violation constitutes an electoral offence.
He noted that IHEC’s field teams will closely monitor adherence to the silence period, both in on-ground campaigning and through media and social networks.
Zair called on all political forces and candidates to respect the silence period and help ensure a fair and transparent election that reflects the will of the voters.
