The number of drowning incidents recorded this year is close to last year’s figures, with Erbil topping the list of cases.
Sarkawt Karash, spokesman for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Civil Defense, said Monday that 61 people have drowned across the Kurdistan Region since the beginning of the year. He added that the bodies of two victims Avesta and a young child have still not been found due to the difficult geography of the locations, including deep caves and underwater cavities.
He explained that Civil Defense teams continue efforts to reduce drowning incidents through awareness campaigns, public guidelines, and the deployment of rescue teams in many high-risk areas.
According to official statistics, Erbil recorded 21 drownings, Soran 10, Zakho 8, Akre 8, Duhok 5, Sulaimanyah 3, Halabja 2, Raparen 2 and Garmian 2.
