The Iraqi Ministry of Health announced that it has issued 1.6 billion health labels for privately imported medicines, raising the percentage of labeled medicines from 30 percent to 70 percent over the past two years.

Health Ministry spokesman Saif Badr said Wednesday that the Iraqi Council of Ministers has approved a plan to regulate the pharmaceutical sector. He noted that monitoring teams from inspection offices, security forces and the pharmacists union in Baghdad and other provinces are supervising pharmacies daily to ensure the placement of the stickers.

The sticker system provides detailed information about the medicine’s official price, source, expiration date and other technical specifications.

The ministry considers the sticker system one of the most reliable international mechanisms for regulating the drug market, increasing public confidence in medicines and preventing price manipulation.
