A source in the Iraqi Oil Ministry told NRT on Saturday that the government is determined to ensure payments to oil companies and hopes that no party will obstruct the resumption of oil exports from the Kurdistan Region.
According to the source, a trilateral agreement between the Kurdistan Region, Baghdad, and the oil companies is expected to be signed this week. The agreement will be implemented immediately if no problems arise. Oil companies have already reviewed Baghdad’s comments and expressed their approval of the deal.
The ministry said oil companies are insisting on a legal guarantee to receive their financial entitlements, and the upcoming agreement is intended to address that concern. An expert team will also review company contracts, which include allocating 50,000 barrels per day for domestic needs.
Officials emphasized that resuming oil exports will help solve the Kurdistan Region’s salary problem. However, observers noted that before every election, Erbil announces progress toward an agreement with Baghdad but often withdraws afterward, leaving the issue unresolved. The fate of July and August salaries remains uncertain.
