The Shiite Coordination Framework is expected to meet today to make a decision on the prime ministerial candidate, amid continued internal discussions.
According to a report by Al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper on Monday, December 15, 2025, disagreements within the Coordination Framework persist regarding the nominee for the post. The report noted that the competition remains primarily between Mohammed Shia Sudani and Nouri al-Maliki.
The newspaper added that speculation about a long or short list of candidates is exaggerated, as in practice only two names are seriously competing for the position.
Sources said the Coordination Framework is seeking to strike a balance in selecting a candidate who is acceptable both domestically and internationally.
