Massoud Barzani has called for changing the mechanism for electing the Iraqi president, stressing that no political party should treat the post as its exclusive right.
In a statement released by Barzani’s headquarters on Monday, he said the presidency should be regarded as the Kurdish share as a whole, not owned by any single party. He emphasized the need to change the current mechanism for selecting the president.
Barzani outlined three possible mechanisms:

Appointing a Kurdish representative through the Kurdistan Parliament to assume the presidency.

All Kurdish parties meeting and agreeing on a single candidate.

Kurdish blocs and representatives in the Iraqi parliament selecting a candidate for the post.
He added that the presidential candidate does not have to belong to the PUK or KDP and may come from another party or be an independent figure, stressing that the key requirement is broad Kurdish consensus and genuine representation of the Kurdish people.
