The Iraqi Oil Ministry announced that more than $5 billion will be returned to the country’s treasury each year as a result of achieving self-sufficiency in oil products and halting imports of gasoline, kerosene, and gas.

Iraqi Oil Ministry Deputy Secretary Basim Mohammed said Thursday that the country’s refinery capacity has now exceeded one million barrels per day, allowing Iraq to meet domestic needs and strengthen its energy market.

He added that stopping imports of oil products will not only save billions of dollars annually but will also enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of Iraq’s energy sector.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Sudani recently directed the suspension of gasoline, kerosene, and gas imports after domestic production reached a sufficient level to meet the country's consumption requirements.
