Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani has won the mayoral election in New York City, according to preliminary results released by the city’s Election Commission on Wednesday.
Mamdani, 34, will become New York City’s first Muslim mayor when he officially takes office in early January. He defeated the former governor and Republican candidate in a decisive victory, Reuters reported.
"Turn up your television's volume because I know you’re watching me now,” Mamdani said in his first speech after the preliminary results were announced, referencing former President Donald Trump in a remark to critics and viewers.
Zohran Mamdani is an American politician and socialist activist of Indian and Muslim descent. A member of both the Democratic Party and the Democratic Socialists of America, he previously served as a New York State Assembly member.
Born in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani moved with his family to South Africa at the age of five and later to the United States, where they settled in New York City. He graduated from Bronx Science High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in Black Studies from Bowdoin College in Maine in 2014.
Mamdani’s victory marks a historic moment for New York City, symbolizing greater diversity and representation in U.S. urban politics.
