A delegation led by Nuri al-Maliki, the head of the State of Law Coalition, arrived in the Kurdistan Region on Saturday to discuss the formation of the new Iraqi government.
Al-Maliki met with KDP leader Massoud Barzani as part of ongoing negotiations between Baghdad and Erbil. Al-Maliki, who is among several candidates seeking the prime ministerial position alongside Mohammed Shia Sudani and others, said in an interview that he supports forming the new government within one month.
He explained that the Coordination Framework has set specific criteria for selecting the next prime minister and has not ruled out the possibility of the current prime minister remaining for a second term.
Al-Maliki also stressed that disputes between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government cannot be solved through temporary agreements, but require clear legislation. He noted that the post-election political process necessitates dialogue in Erbil to address outstanding issues.
Shiite political blocs intensified their efforts to form a government following the announcement of the election results. Earlier, Mohammed Shia Sudani, leader of the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, also visited the Kurdistan Region as part of these discussions.
