The director of the Erbil slaughterhouse has announced that camel slaughter has been suspended due to the lack of qualified expert slaughterers capable of handling the process safely.
Halmat Hamza, director of the Erbil slaughterhouse, told NRT on Thursday, November 20, 2025, that "camel slaughter requires specialized skills and modern systems, because the process is more difficult than other animals. For this reason, it has been prohibited until proper expertise is available.”
Hamza explained that the municipal slaughterhouse processes between 150 and 200 cattle daily, while only one to two camels were being slaughtered before the ban. He added that the restriction is intended to maintain safety, hygiene, and compliance with proper animal-handling standards.
