The Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Interior has denied reports claiming that number plates will be issued to vehicles without starters or registration, describing such statements as part of election campaign propaganda.
Hemn Mirani, Director of the Office of the Ministry of Interior, said in an interview with Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) media that only the Ministry of Interior has the authority to issue vehicle numbers in the region.
"The ministry will not issue number plates to vehicles without proper licensing, and anything said about it is merely an election campaign tactic,” Mirani told NRT on Monday.
There are currently around 100,000 unregistered vehicles across the Kurdistan Region.
Security sources and observers have accused PUK and KDP officials of smuggling many of these vehicles across the borders for personal and political gain.
