The Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Refugees said that more than 19,000 Iraqis have been returned from Syria’s Al-Hol Camp since 2021. The returnees include women, children, and elderly individuals who are undergoing comprehensive rehabilitation programs to facilitate their reintegration into society, ministry spokesman Ali Abbas said on Monday.
He explained that the process has been coordinated with the National Security Advisor, the Joint Operations Command, and international organizations. According to the ministry, around 31,500 Iraqis had been residing in the camp prior to the repatriation efforts.
The returnees are first transferred to the Amal Center for security screening and assessment to determine their level of exposure to extremist ideology. Based on these assessments, they are enrolled in appropriate rehabilitation programs.
The ministry stated that 78 rehabilitation programs have been implemented so far, in cooperation with government institutions, Iraqi universities such as Baghdad and Nineveh, and international partners.
Abbas added that one of the key achievements of the repatriation process has been the prevention of tensions or clashes between returnees and local communities, achieved through national reconciliation initiatives.
