The Iraqi government has completed the construction of a new oil refinery in Basra that meets international environmental standards and can produce more than four million liters of gasoline per day.
Hussam Hussein, Director General of the Southern Refineries Company, said on Thursday that the refinery aims to enhance Iraq’s self-sufficiency in oil products, reduce imports, and generate significant foreign currency revenues. The facility has a production capacity of 50,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
He added that the refinery uses modern technology, producing 4.2 million liters of gasoline daily covering around 20 percent of Iraq’s domestic demand.
The Oil Ministry also plans to expand refining capacity through new projects, including the Faw Investment Refinery, which will have a capacity of up to one million barrels per day. These initiatives, he said, will help Iraq become an exporter of refined products and strengthen the national economy.
