The Anfal campaign, led by Ali Hassan al-Majid—the first head of the Ba'ath Party in the Kurdistan Region—was conducted in eight phases, the most significant of which was the third phase. This phase marked the largest military operation of the campaign and is now commemorated as Anfal Day in the Kurdistan Region.
Although the Iraqi parliament officially recognized the Anfal campaign as genocide on April 14, 2008, it has yet to receive recognition from the international community.
The Kurdish people have endured numerous atrocities throughout history, many of which fall under the definition of genocide—including the use of chemical weapons and the systematic violence carried out during the Anfal campaign.
