Srwa Abdulwahid, leader of the New Generation Movement faction in the Iraqi Parliament, issued a statement on Sunday marking the 29th anniversary of the events of August 31, describing it as "one of the ugliest memories” for the Kurdish people.

Abdulwahid accused the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), led by Masoud Barzani, of committing a "major treacherous crime” when it used the backing of Saddam Hussein’s regime forces to occupy the Kurdistan Parliament and the city of Erbil in 1996.

She said the move demonstrated the same mentality that rejects peaceful solutions and coexistence, adding that this approach later led to the independence referendum, whose consequences the people of Kurdistan "are still paying the price for.”

"August 31 will remain a stain on the forehead of this party, and history will not be merciful,” Abdulwahid stated, noting that the operations led to killings, looting, and the disappearance of many people whose fate remains unknown.

She also warned that if given the chance, those responsible "would not hesitate for a moment to repeat what happened in the past.”
