SULAIMANI — Supporters of Iraq's Tishreen Uprising said on
Tuesday (September 27) they will hold a protest in Baghdad’s Tahrir Square on
October 1 to reject the governing system and corruption, and to commemorate the
martyrs of the Tishreen movement.
The movement’s supporters said in a statement the protest
will be peacefully held without damaging property and that they have called for
the public to join them.
The statement asked the protesters not to approach the Green
Zone in order to avoid clashes with the security forces.
In the statement, the Tishreen supporters held the current
caretaker government responsible for bringing those suspected of killing
protestors to justice.
Known as the Tishreen Uprising, the months of demonstrations
in 2019 demanding root and branch changes to the system of governance
constituted the largest protest movement in Iraq since the US invasion in 2003.
According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, at least
487 people were killed during the protests and more than 7,000 were injured,
although other estimates cite a death toll of more than 700.
