A pond of crude oil has formed near Dukan Lake, raising concerns about possible contamination of the lake’s water. Witnesses in the area said the tankers involved were carrying license plates from cities within the Kurdistan Region.

Residents told NRT that despite authorities being aware of the incident, no measures have yet been taken to contain the spread of the crude oil or prevent it from mixing with the lake, which could lead to serious environmental pollution.

An environmental activist warned that, in addition to threatening drinking water, the spill also poses risks to nearby pastures, farmland, and livestock that graze in the area.
