The three Iraqi presidencies held a meeting on Tuesday at Baghdad Palace to discuss regional developments and preparations for the upcoming elections.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, President Abdul Latif Rashid, and Parliament Speaker Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani addressed several pressing issues during the meeting, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.
The leaders reviewed the political and security situation in the region and emphasized the importance of safeguarding Iraq from external threats and regional tensions. They also discussed the necessary steps to ensure fair and timely elections.
A key point of discussion was the Khawr Abdullah maritime agreement, which had previously been approved by the Iraqi parliament but was later deemed unconstitutional by the Federal Supreme Court due to lack of quorum during the vote. The three presidencies agreed on the need for parliament to complete the legal procedures related to the agreement.
The meeting concluded with a unified stance that Iraq’s international agreements must be handled with caution and sensitivity, and should not be used as tools for political or media exploitation, as doing so would harm Iraq’s interests, rights, and global reputation.
