Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani announced Monday that Iraq will stop importing gasoline by the end of this year, citing major progress in refinery development projects across several provinces.

Al-Sudani confirmed that the refineries in Maysan, Diwaniya, and Najaf are nearing completion and will soon begin exporting oil products. "We are transitioning from an oil-importing country to one that meets its own domestic needs,” he said.

The Diwaniya refinery, according to the Prime Minister, already supplies 180 tons of liquefied natural gas and 10,000 barrels of gasoline daily. He emphasized that only a small amount of gasoline is still being imported, and that will cease by the end of 2025 once the projects are fully operational.

The move marks a significant step in Iraq’s energy independence strategy and is expected to reduce the country’s reliance on foreign fuel.
