The Iraqi Ministry of Oil announced the start of drilling its first oil well in the Kufri district of the Kurdistan Region, as part of a broader initiative to explore and develop new hydrocarbon resources across the country.

On Sunday, the ministry signed a contract with the state-run Iraqi Oil Exploration Company and the Northern Oil Company to drill the well. The agreement falls under the government’s wider program to drill 15 new oil and gas wells aimed at increasing national energy output.

Oil Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani confirmed that the drilling program is a key pillar of the government’s strategy to develop untapped resources. Deputy Oil Minister for Extraction Affairs, Bassem Mohammed Khazair, noted that the Kufri well is expected to yield light crude and associated gas.

Hassan Mohammed Hassan, director general of the Iraqi Oil Drilling Company, said the well is strategically significant as it marks the first exploration of its kind in the area. He emphasized that the drilling will benefit the Northern Oil Company and could open new avenues for energy production.

Amer Khalil, director general of the Northern Oil Company, added that the contract supports the company’s goals to expand its hydrocarbon reserves in Salahaddin province and confirmed that logistical support is already in place to ensure the successful execution of the project.
