SULAIMANI—Student protests resumed on Sunday (December 5) in Sulaimani, Halabja, Qaladze
and Koya, with students from universities and institutes continuing to demand
their monthly stipends from the Kurdistan Regional Government.
Students
at Raparin Education Department blocked the Ranya-Qaladze Road.
A
student from Halabja told NRT none of their demands have been met even after student
representatives met with KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.
Students at the University of Sulaimani closed the main
gates at the campus and refused to allow vehicles to pass through.
A number of student protests were held last month in the
Kurdistan Region and the demonstrations resulted in the arrest and injury of many
students.
Some universities and institutes announced a break for several
days in an effort to end the protests.
The KRG suspended issuing student stipends, which help cover
the cost of transportation and living expenses of students at universities and
institutes, in response to the financial crisis that began in 2014.
