SULAIMANI — Iraq’s judicial authority said
on Tuesday (July 19) an investigation has begun into the accuracy of alleged audio
recordings of the head of the State of Law Coalition, Nuri al-Maliki, which
contained highly inflammatory accusations against the head of the Sadrist
Movement, Muqtada al-Sadr.
The investigation began when a complaint was filed with the Karkh Court of Investigation, requiring legal procedures to be taken.
Iraqi journalist Ali Fadhil began posting a
number of audio recordings to his Twitter account on July 13, alleging the
recordings came from a meeting between Shia members of the government and Nuri
al-Maliki.
In the alleged statements, Maliki said he
did not trust the Iraqi military, police, or the Popular Mobilization Forces, accused
Sadr of murder and kidnapping, and appeared to be willing to resort to
violence.
Muqtada al-Sadr gave a strong response to
the recordings on Monday, stating he was "threatened with murder” by the Dawa Party
and Maliki. Sadr called on Maliki to resign from politics and surrender to the
court.
Maliki has denied the authenticity of the
recordings.
