The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) have secured 18 new senior posts in Baghdad, even as both parties continue to create difficulties for salary earners in the Kurdistan Region.

On Wednesday, 79 newly appointed Iraqi ambassadors were sworn in before the president and the foreign minister. Out of a total of 93 new ambassadorial positions, 19 went to Kurds, with 18 of those belonging to the PUK and KDP.

Critics point out that while the two ruling Kurdish parties portray themselves as locked in disputes with Baghdad, threatening withdrawal and blaming the federal government for the Region’s financial crisis—they continue to secure high-ranking positions in the Iraqi state.
