Activists and members of the New Generation Movement gathered on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, to protest the extension of journalist Omid Baroshki’s prison sentence, calling it unjust and politically motivated. The demonstration included several MPs, notably Shvan Saeed, who addressed reporters during a press conference.
Saeed strongly condemned the court’s decision, stating that the additional six-month sentence imposed on Baroshki is illegal and lacks proper legal basis. "This is a clear violation of judicial procedures and the rights of a journalist,” he said.
Baroshki, who was initially sentenced to six months in prison on December 30, 2024, for a journalism-related case, was scheduled to be released on Monday, July 28, 2025. However, instead of being freed, his case was referred back to court and his sentence was extended for another six months.
In protest, Omid Baroshki has been on a hunger strike for 11 consecutive days, raising concerns about his health and the continued suppression of press freedom in the region.
