Hoshyar Zebari, a member of the Executive Committee of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), has strongly criticized Baghdad’s recent decision to halt the salaries of public employees in the Kurdistan Region, calling it a political maneuver with potential consequences.

In a statement, Zebari said that while there may be technical issues, the Iraqi Ministry of Finance’s move is politically motivated and unconstitutional. "What interest does Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and the Coordination Framework have in triggering a crisis at a sensitive time, especially with parliamentary elections approaching?" Zebari asked.

His remarks came after the Iraqi Ministry of Finance issued a formal warning that it can no longer transfer monthly salary allocations to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), claiming the region has exceeded its share of the 2024 federal budget.

Zebari warned that such decisions could destabilize the political process and fuel further mistrust between Erbil and Baghdad, particularly when national unity is needed ahead of the upcoming elections scheduled for November 2025.
