The Iraqi Election Commission (IEC) announced Saturday that 21 million citizens now hold biometric cards, a key requirement for voting in future elections. The effort has seen strong participation from youth and university students.
Imad Jamil, head of the IEC’s media team, stated that more than 1.6 million biometric cards have been newly issued or updated so far. He advised that citizens who already possess a biometric card only need to visit registration centers if there is an address change or an error in the card’s information.
"There is no need to re-register unless your address has changed or the card has mistakes,” Jamil said.
The commission noted that Baghdad, Nineveh, Basra, and Sulaymaniyah have recorded the highest number of registered voters. The biometric system is part of broader efforts to enhance electoral transparency and prevent fraud.
