Iraq will open its first solar power plant by the end of this year, with a production capacity of 250 megawatts, Oil Minister Hayyan Abdul Ghani announced on Thursday.
The project is part of Iraq’s broader commitment to reduce gas flaring and adopt cleaner energy sources. "We have acknowledged the impacts of climate change and are taking steps to transition towards renewable energy,” the minister said, adding that several other solar projects are already underway.
The government plans to completely phase out gas burning as part of its long-term climate and energy strategy.
