On May 19, 1992, exactly 33 years ago, the first general elections were held to form the Kurdistan Parliament. These were the first democratic elections in the Kurdistan Region following the Kurdish uprising against the Ba'ath regime.

Today, May 19, 2025, marks the anniversary of this historic event, which laid the foundation for self-governance in the Kurdistan Region. The inaugural Kurdistan Parliament consisted of 105 seats.

As Iraq approaches its upcoming parliamentary elections, many citizens who missed the chance to vote in previous rounds see this election as an opportunity to hold the two dominant ruling parties accountable. Authorities remind voters that those who have not issued or renewed their biometric cards will not be eligible to participate in the Iraqi parliamentary elections.
