Imprisoned Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan has described the decision by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) to dissolve itself as "historic,” in a message issued following the group’s 12th Congress.
In his statement, Ocalan welcomed the outcomes of the congress and expressed support for the PKK’s move to transition away from armed struggle. "The decision of the 12th Congress is historic,” he said, adding that the messages conveyed for the next phase were significant and necessary.
On Monday, May 12, 2025, the PKK officially announced its dissolution and the end of its armed campaign. The decision marked a major shift in the group’s decades-long conflict with Turkey. The congress was held simultaneously in two locations for security reasons and attended by 232 delegates.
Founded in 1978 by Abdullah Ocalan, the PKK had operated as an armed group for nearly 48 years. Its 12th Congress declared the end of its military activities and called for a political resolution to the Kurdish issue through democratic means.
The announcement is being viewed as a pivotal development in Kurdish-Turkish relations and could signal a new phase in regional politics.
