SULAIMANI — Jaafar Ibrahim Eminki, a member of the Kurdistan
Democratic Party (KDP) Politburo, said Iraq’s State Organization for Marketing
Oil (SOMO) will supervise the Kurdistan Region’s oil income.
Eminkin said during an appearance on NRT’s Taw u Twe program
on Sunday (March 26) that the recent international arbitration court ruling on
the Kurdistan Region’s oil exports through Turkey will open the door to
negotiations between Baghdad and Erbil.
He stated cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and the
federal government will continue and said the Regional Government has a good
relationship with the new Iraqi government cabinet.
Parties governing the Region
Eminki said he could not describe the governance of the
Region’s two ruling parties, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the
Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), as good or bad but instead stated, "They
have done their best.”
He said criticism from the US over the Kurdistan Regional
Government’s (KRG) administration will be taken seriously, and Eminki admitted
there were problems with democracy and governance in the Region.
The PUK and the KDP both govern the Kurdistan Region. The
two parties have faced criticism from the international community on the
drawback of democracy in the Region especially after the Kurdistan
parliamentary election was postponed in 2022.
The Kurdistan parliamentary election
Eminki said the KDP supports holding elections and stated
many of the issues between the PUK and KDP have been resolved. He also noted a
team from the PUK will return to government meetings next week.
He said all political parties in the Region agree on holding
elections this year and that Kurdistan’s reputation will suffer if they fail to
do so.
The parliamentary election was supposed to be held in
October 2022, but was delayed due to a dispute between the KDP and PUK.
Officials in the KRG have announced that the election must
be held this year, after officials from the international community stressed
the importance of holding the polls.
