SULAIMANI — The Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Health
announced on Wednesday (March 22) it will pursue penalties against doctors who
seek to delay or advance the date of a child’s birth.
The ministry is instituting the penalties in order to put a
stop to the practice of parents seeking unusual dates for their children’s
birth, such as March 3, 2023 (3/3/23).
The health ministry said the decision has been issued for
the benefit and safety of newborns and their mothers.
All hospitals in the public and private sector will receive
notice of the decision in order to prevent the practice from continuing.
Childbirth should only be advanced or delayed for medical
reasons, the ministry stated, adding doctors and hospitals that do otherwise
will face legal consequences.
